... Leash/pick-up laws have been in effect for many years, but
with environmental awareness as prevalent as it is today, these
laws are getting much more attention now than in the
past.
Market Research has proven that there is a need for
a product to be available to consumers for the "not so pleasant"
task of picking up after their pets.
JEM Products is
introducing a new and useful product called the "LEASHMATE". The
LEASHMATE is an inexpensive, refillable cartridge, made to fit
securely on any leash, (nylon, leather, retractable) or nylon
collar.
The LEASHMATE is packaged to offer the purchaser
a handy dispenser with bags, that is always within "Hands
Reach", leaving no mess behind when their pet eliminates. This
is a product that no dog owner should be
without.
LEASHMATE is packaged with 1 canister and 30
bags, and retails for $6.00 + tax & shipping. (NY residents
only)
Refill packages containing 60 bags are available
for $7.00 + tax & shipping. (NY residents only). Most Major
Credit Card Accepted, Check or M.O.

Economies of Scale
... I know in France and other European countries, the
government has a special department that collects dog poop
around the city. These people ride their motorcyles and use
vacuuming equipment to collect the poop. It is amazing, but TONS
of poop are collected.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a
use for dog poop-fertilizer or fuel maybe?

vacuum. Can you find out more, or suggest where I might learn
more?

Re: Economies of Scale
... I've already looked into the vacuuming idea, but all the
blower/vac units I've run across would suck the PooP through the
fan compartment of the vacuum. And we all know what happens
when the PooP hits the fan :)!!
I'm also interested in
hearing more about the vacuuming system you are talking about.
Please tell us more.
thanks!

Re: Economies of Scale
... I have owned a scooping business for 3 years. When I first
started it I searched for someone who could use the waste rather
than "dump" it and found that it is good for nothing. Dog waste
hurts nothing but does nothing any good either. It's a shame
all that perfectly good poop has to go to "waste" isn't it?

Free advertising works great
... We've recently had some luck with a free advertising
approach. We negotiated with the humane society and the therapy
animals group in our area, agreeing to clean up at their events
in exchange for advertising in their newletters. We've gotten
four new customers from our advertising this way. We've only
cleaned at one event, so far, and we were able to man a small
booth and pass out flyers while there. We just got a call from
someone off one of the flyers, too. Since we're a new concept in
this area, and we're starting on a shoestring budget, we feel
any way we get the word around for FREE is worth it--for now,
before we get too big to spend that much time.
I'm going
to try the welcome wagon approach next, although I'm reluctant
to pay for advertising. We've gotten 1 customer off of all our
paid advertising in three months, and they've cancelled for the
winter. Our experience is that word of mouth is slow, but
solid.
Cheers!

Accounting software
... Just wondering what type of accounting software the
established pooper scooper companies have found most beneficial
for this type of business. Any Suggestions? Any comments as to
why one may be better than another?

Re: Accounting software
... I personally have been very happy using a good database
management program, namely Lotus Approach, for this function.
I have heard others applaud Quicken and
Quickbooks.

forms in your manual
... Hello! I received your manual and read it in its entirety
in one evening it was very informative and a great help. I was
wondering if I could use a variation of some of the forms that
you used as examples in your manual. I live in Virginia and
didn't think it would affect your old business since it is in
Ohio. The forms I wanted to use were a variation of your
general information and the new customer sign up sheet if it is
okay with you.
Thanks,
Kathy

Re: forms in your manual
... Yes! As a purchaser of "The Professional Pooper-Scooper:
How to start your own low-cost, high-profit dog waste removal
service," you may adapt the business forms, sales letters,
flyers, and news releases and modify them for your own use.
These materials have proven to be effective for me. You may
come up with improvements or entirely new and original
materials, too, of course. But with the examples I've provided
in the manual you'll have something to get you off to a running
start. :-)

Oh brother.......
... Ya know, when it rains it pours, and sometimes it just
floods...
on the way to recovering from all the previous
problems, I decided to fracture my ribs, tear my left pectoral,
intercostal, lat & assorted other muscles (never try to move
something that's bigger than you are, I think was the learned
lesson here). And of course, expect your truck to be stolen from
a busy parking lot at the local Staples office supply store
(THAT will be the most expensive paper I EVER bought... ) at
lunch today. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Sheez.......

Re: Re: Tools of the Trade
... Almost correct. It's actually $89.95. I didn't realize I
put the wrong price until fine people like yourself questioned
it. Thanks. Just a reminder, it IS made of high quality
stainless steel. (expensive stuff) I've been using mine for over
10 years now.

Re: Tools of the Trade
... First, let's take a wild guess that a hundred bucks was a
mistake.
Retangular shaped shovel heads are TERRIBLE!
You can actually hurt yourself. The motion and postition of
your arm is very unnatural. I used to have to use one as
supplied by a customer. I finally disinfected a shovel and left
it at her house.

Re: Re: Tools of the Trade
... Actually, it's not a shovel, it's a paddle used to get the
hard to pick up piles, you know, the sloppy ones. I've been
using mine for over 10 years now and have yet to "hurt" myself.
Thank you.
