A business line or not? How will your new customers find you?

How will your new customers find you? You pay for advertising, you get maybe free editorials about your comapany, maybe even mention on the radio. So a few days later or a month later this new customer decides to call but does not have the phone number.
One to two customers a month is going to take care of the expense of the phone line for the business, buy an answering machine, why pay the phone company 7-8 dollars per month for theirs.
If you cannot be found in information you will not have the exposure you need,

Re: Parvocidal Disinfectant

Hi Red,
I use Ken-Care Kennel Disinfectant. It is available from R.C. Steele 1-800-872-3773. I think it is $23.98 for a gallon. You add 2 oz. per gallon of water so it goes a long ways.

Atlanta Laws regarding dog waste

I am fascinated by this whole poop-scoop thing. Can anyone tell me what the rules and regulations are in Atlanta, GA regarding removing the waste. Such as where are you allowed to dump the waste, do you need a permit, etc. Or can someone direct me in the right direction to get this information.

Thank You

Re: Atlanta Laws regarding dog waste

It is very expensive and a royal pain to deal with waste in Atlanta. There seem to be SOOOO many more regulations and limitations here than other places. Some of the other scooper folks I've spoken with don't have near the requirements. Very strage.

Commercial Contracts

Regarding the use of contracts for commercial work, what type of information would be included (besides rates, name of property)? If anyone has a draft that they might be interested in forwarding to me or advise I would very much appreciate any feedback. Matthew? Thanks.

Re: Commercial Contracts

Besides the name and address of the property, and the rates, I would advise a detailed description of exactly what areas are to be cleaned, for instance "The area within 50 feet of buildings number 4,5, 6, the grassy common areas between Dog Lane and Cat Drive" or something like that, to be perfectly clear about exactly where you will be cleaning. Include a map of the property with the appropriate markings, if possible).
Also state the schedule of cleanings: what areas will be cleaned on what days, what arrangements are to be made in case a cleaning has to be cancelled or postponed due to weather or other problems. Spell out when your invoice will be sent and when the payment will be due, and include a late fee for payments not made by that date.
You want to included as much information that will make it clear what your job is, when, how much and in what way you will be paid.
If your contract is not for a certain period of time, state clearly that rates and schedules are subject to change, with notification and approval of the client.

Re: listing

The first place I would look would be the local government office that issues dog licenses. Some places sell the list of dog license applicants very inexpensively.

Re: listing

I went to town hall and asked them for a list of registered dog owners. They sold me the list for $25. It even included the names of the dogs. I got a flyer together and sent them to the dogs. It took a bit of time typing all the addresses into my computer (1,300 of them) but now all I have to do is push a button and I have mailing labels for them. i got about 5 customers this way when i started. Definitely worth $25!! Good luck!

re-starting business

Greetings,
I was very excited to find your web page. I had a similar business in Lexington, KY for several years. I have relocated to New Jersey and am planning on opening up my business here. I was wondering if you would mind sharing some information with me please?
For those who deliver dog food or pet supplies Where do you get your dog food? Do you buy direct or work through a neighborhood store? Do you have mainly private individuals or apartments? In Lexington I was mainly employed by apartments. Is this your full time job or a side line? I tried to keep it small in Lexington but plan on shooting for the moon now!
Any way, I would love to correspond with you about our businesses if you would like!
Sincerely,
Lisa Scott

Smelly Poop

We have a small patio and a smaller part of it is dirt. When we let our dog out, he does his duty on the dirt part. Well we can only p/u the poop every couple of days and we're trying to figure out what we can put down to reduce the smell. For example, grass, rocks, sand, etc..
Any ideas??? PLEASE help.
Thanks!

Re: Smelly Poop

Take your dog for an actual walk - not just letting it out in a small patio. He/she will gladly evacuate elsewhere, especially if it includes the excercise and stimulation it needs.

You can take a baggy with you and collect the waste as soon as he/she is done, so you don't have to worry about doing special cleanups.

Re: Smelly Poop

Thanks but no thanks for that reply. I take my dog for a 30-45 minute walk once a day. My husband and I are are full time workers and students (temporarily), & my Dog is STILL walked everyday. Most busy parents haven't the time for that. Before I get folks jumping on my case that I shouldn't even own a Dog because I'm so busy...one shouldn't jump to assumptions & must understand that it wasn't always like this and it won't always be like this. We saved this Dog from a pound in japan where we lived and have gone to great expense to keep him with us and quite healthy.

SOOOOO....anyone have some advice about my original question? Thanks.

Radio Ads - Can anyone help me?

Hello Everyone!
Has anyone done Radio ads for their scooping business?
If so, would it be possible to get the "creative" that was done for it?
I have a couple I can share with anyone who is interested, but I really don't think they are all that great.....
The radio station did them up for me, but I was looking for something a little more outstanding. I am looking at a 30 second spot, during "drive time", at 70.00 a pop. (!!!!???) I know print is generally better, but the DJ they have in the mornings is a big dog lover, and I plan on subsidizing my debt with some contest prizes, and attempting an interview as well.
I appreciate anyones suggestions!

Thanks,
Scoopy Doo

New Business

I am starting my own pooper-scooper business - my ads come out next Wednesday, Sept. 1st. My question is how much do you charge for a twice a week service? I read on the message board that a once every two week pick-up someone charges 1 1/2 times the weekly rate. I have my price set for the weekly but am unsure what to charge for twice a week. I am really excited about this business, my friends think I am crazy though!

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: New Business

For me, charging three quarters of the once-a-week charge for each twice-weekly visit works. For example, if I'm charging $6 for once a week service, I would charge $4.50 per visit for twice a week service.
The reasoning goes like this: Though you have to drive the same amount to get to the yard, the work in the yard goes much more quickly. I think it takes less than half the time that weekly cleaning takes, because all the waste is that much more recent it's easier to locate and scoop, and of course there's only half the amount. If there is more than one dog, or the dog is very large, twice-weekly service may save you the time of changing bags while in the yard, too.
You can also promote the more frequent service by reminding your clients that you can provide "Twice the service for just a little more."
