rid of mess

I don't want a business, I just want some help with ridding my own back yard of feces safely. I bought a do dooley a couple of years ago and it worked o.k. except when I put the hose in to flush it on through the smell to my neighbors was awful. I have a small yard and neighbors on each side and a huge Great Pyrenees. Is there something out there to break it down safely or any suggestions other than those little bags which I then have to put in the trash for my poor sanitation people to deal with. Please email me with suggestions

Secondly, this Web site IS your answer - You don't want to smell it anymore? Well get a professional scooper to rid your yard of filth for you!
If you're in/around Dallas, TX give me a call, if not go to the International Directory of Dog Waste Removal Services on this Web site.

Paul...

I carry a small spray bottle with water in it. I set it on "stream" and aim for between the eyes, at the same time I say "NO" firmly. This is a dog trainers trick and it works. Usually, though, if you get right down to scooping busily, the dog backs off to watch you. Ya gotta wonder what they think of us playing with their poop---and messing up a perfectly good territory marking system!!

Good Article!

Well, all my promotional calls, letters and e-mails finally got some results - click here or cut and paste it into your browser to check out a short but cool little article from the front page of the Metro section in the Dallas paper.

WOW...nice article! And on the front page, no less! What finally got the newspaper's attention for them to do a piece on your business?

The author mentions your income---let us know if that spawns new competitors within the next 6 months.

Hi Tricia!

I guess my message finally made it to the right person at the right time.

Oh, I'm very sure that there will be new competition soon. As you can imagine, I received a bunch of calls after the article came out - MANY of them didn't seemed to be the usual prospective customer calls - various odd questions etc.

This Saturday I've got a decent size event I'm donating our services too and then on Saturday we've got a huge paid gig servicing over 5,000 people plus there should be lots o' media! Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Just Starting

I have been wanting to start this business for about 2 months now. I have ordered and read Matt's book and I have sent for the State and Federal govt papers for my company name, but that is as far as I have gotten. I am at a stand still because I am confused about what to do next?
I want my business to be complete before I start trying to get business. I would like a web site, a second phone line, business cards, and flyers. Can anyone give me a suggestion about how they got started! Did you have a web site first? Was it free? Did you have a second phone line? Did you have a pick up truck? How did you advertise first? How should I start out? Should I just do flyers first in neighborhoods and vets, and get a few customer? Or, should I try to set up the company first and get organized, and then try to get customers?

Re: Just Starting

Chris...

You don't have a business if you don't have clients (by the way, customers buy things, clients buy services). Forget the website for now. This business is so new, very few would look for you. I have my business card on 4 sites and Matthew's directory and in a 1 1/2 years, I have only signed-up one person (from the latter) It is something you can create while you are waiting for your first client to call!

Your confusion is because you don't have a written business plan. I don't mean the formal business plan that you need to get a bank loan...I mean a simple "To Do" list---in the order you think you can afford to get things or when you think you will need things. Make several lists---Equipment, Marketing, Office set-up, Business forms, Uniform & outdoor clothing, Business License/Health Dept. requirements, etc., etc. This helps you get mentally organized and it is so fun to check things off as your business becomes reality.

Re: Just Starting

my company to is also new . And tell you what i so far have love doing it . But advise testing the waters first. So far doing fliers door to door has been good exercize. But not one responce .However telling everybody you know and giving them some cards has worked. Also Tricias tip about putting cards in books on dogs got a response.(here's a extra tip on that, stick them in the House breaking chapters)

I am glad i decided to go slow and just started with the basics .I feel i don't got nothing to loose and a lot to gain.

As what i drive .I use my mini-van . keep equipment clean dispose most of the poop in customers garbage and it won,t smell .As for a sign's on the Van, Staples has a magnetic sign kit so you can make your own sign. It's good for starting out.
All together I spent about $150.00 Starting out . and The money on Matts book was the best investment of all. Allready i earned that money back. This week i am doing a classified in the local pennysaver.
As for phone line use your home phone. You don't want to run up bill's when the income is not there.
Go slow and if by anychance it don't work out for you as a full time buisiness ,It could be a good 2nd income.
As far as a web site you already found the best Get your name on the directory here .It's free advertising for you.
Something that worked good so far a some will think im nuts for offering it' but give out as many free gift certificate's as you can. Offer them for Doorprises ,Golf tourney prize .most places will take a free gift to give no matter what it is. Also i offer friends and family $5.00 for each lead they give me that takes a weekly service. Yeah this means i am giving away the 1st service i do for somebody. But the next week that person who was a freebie before is now a paying customer.

you gotta be patient and don,t give up the day job yet. You can have alot fun with this job it will be what you make it. But go slow and keep reading this board i read it about 2-3 times a day.

Brian...
Glad to see you used one of the tips from "Cheap Marketing Tricks: A-Z." They are fun and best of all...they work!
I have an additional comment on your phone line costs. When I started, I got a business line to our home office. By ordering a business line, I can get into the Yellow Pages. I worded my business name carefully so that my free entry in Yellow Pages and the White Pages says it all in the title. THEN, I ordered a home, personal line which I use for the Net and my Fax machine. I found that those two phone numbers cost very little that way---AND---YOU CAN WRITE OFF BOTH OF THEM AS BUSINESS EXPENSES! Of course, you always have to answer the phone with your business name, but you should anyway (your friends and family will understand!) By the way, I asked for similar numbers for them and for my car phone, so that I could remember them all!

Re: Just Starting

Tricia is right! You will start with one "to do" list and that will subdivide, and that list will subdivide and so forth and so forth and so forth! The problem I found is that there are soooo many choices! Choices for paper, choices for font, choices for things you had no idea there were choices for! Don't get discouraged! Most often we make the right choice - but if you need to change - the world won't really come to an end! Keep focused on your goals- make them easy to start out with - you get further with realistic goals - "I will do "this" today". Call the County, call the newspaper, call or do some little thing on yout list! Success breeds success! You will get a little piece of info from one agency that can help give you direction to the next step! Good luck - stay in touch!

step by step

I'm just starting out in this business and do not actually have any customers yet. I'd like to know step by step what a service provider does out on the job. You know, #1 enter the yard, #2 search out the piles...and so on all the way through to the disinfecting portion of the program.
Also, do any of you ever bring your child along when you work?
Thanks, Shannon

Re: step by step

Shannon...
Read Matthew's book! It outlines everything in detail. Probably the most concise instructions are those on page 37 entitled "In-Yard Working Procedures for Customer-Service Route Workers"...
As for bringing a child along---totally unprofessional. As a business person, you must respect your "bosses" which are ALL your clients. Look at it from their perspective:
1. You will be distracted if you are keeping an eye on your child, thus possibly not doing a thorough job.
2. The child is a liability if he does something to the dog and gets bitten.
3. Children can be even more destructive than dogs to the landscaping.
4. If your business can't afford a babysitter, it must not be doing very well, therefore it won't be around very long.

Also, since you brought up the children thing, one of the WORST things you can do is have a child answer your business phone. Not only is it annoying to have a high-pitched voice keep asking "who is this", it also indirectly says that this isn't a serious business. Use a recorder or be sure to answer yourself. The children can be given other, unobtrusive chores to be a part of your business, but until they are legal age for employment keep them in the background. The only exception to this is if you have a child-type business like baby-sitting, daycare, or a children's clothing store, etc.

Don't worry, you will be making more than enough to afford child care! Also, you can work faster when you are alone, so that you can be back with your child sooner.

Re: step by step

Shannon,
I do take my child with me and there have been
no problems with it. The clients aren't home. And the dogs are in the house. And my son stays by my side and helps point out piles. You'll have to just see how your child does and ask the clients if they mind. I'm sure it won't be a problem. As for the other lady who wrote you she doesn't sound like she has children or likes children.

Marketing / Promotions / Advertising

Experienced scoopers,

What is your top 1 or 2 best bang-for-the-buck marketing efforts thus far.
Please give the expense - financially, time, or otherwise. Also include the return - as best you can estimate it.

Over the past 2.5 years I have invested around $20,000 worth of marketing efforts and would be happy to share some of my findings with you as soon as I get some responses (I'm tired of not getting many responses to intelligent questions!).

Re: Marketing / Promotions / Advertising

Hi Red...

Without a doubt---the best marketing tool for me has been my brochure. It is on "hot" yellow color card stock, 2-sided (cut to 3 on a page) with an appealing, dog logo on the front. It is cheaper & faster to photocopy ("Kinko's" and I are on a first name basis!) It is an attention getter! People just have to grab one and read it...and pass it around the office (Yesss!)

When I look over my statistics, 98% of my clients called because of that brochure. Mostly, they pick them up from Vets, Groomers, Kennels, & Pet Stores, however, indirectly, they have also been working because people see them and later use another marketing tool to find me again (referrals, Pet Fairs, & even Yellow Pages)
When I ask folks, "How did you hear about us", I am getting more than one marketing tool in response (saw your car sign, T-shirt, calendar, AND got your number from your brochure)

The least productive and the most expensive are the display ads in newspapers---HOWEVER---remember "U" for Ubiquitious in my "Cheap Marketing Tricks: A-Z"---everything you do adds to the visibility of your business. You want to become a household name, especially with competitors out there. I had one competitor that even used part of my business name in her newspaper display ad to obviously confuse people to call her instead of us. She paid a lot of money for that ad, but she is no longer with us today because that was the ONLY thing she did. (heh, heh, heh)

Hang in there Red. With your sense of humor, you will always be successful!! ...and besides it is all write-off-able anyway...

Re: Marketing / Promotions / Advertising

Hi Red.

I have found that I don't have to spend anywhere near that kind of money. Lord knows, I don't have it yet anyways. But I find I get more response from the fliers I put in the vets offices and putting a hand written note on neighbors doors that are next to my clients' homes. They usually call to make sure I'm not a prankster. And I have gotten several clients this way. Not to mention the "GOT POOP" sign I have on the back of my mini-van. That raises a few eyebrows!

Re: Marketing / Promotions / Advertising

Red,
In 1999:
24% of my new customers came from the advertising on my trucks
12% from word of mouth referral
12% from our local free classified ads
7% from our brochure in Vets
6% from out local paper classified
4% from brochure in pet shops
The rest came from about 15 other marketing techniques i.e. yellow page listing, internet, t-shirts etc.

The obvious cost related to the above is the printing of full color brochures and the time to get them in their places, very time consuming. The ads were in smaller local papers, costs about $50.00 per month for each. The trucks, well, I did the lettering myself... about $150.00 per truck.

Success or failure in the Southwest US?

A close friend of mine is looking to get into
the scooping business here in Phoenix Az.
She has been able to get quite a bit of information about starting the business just
from reading the message board & the info in the site itself. What I would like to know is if this business does better in some areas of the country than others. Here in the Phoenix area we have roughly about half a dozen pooper scooper businesses listed in the directory in this web site, but when I tried calling a few or going to their web sites and nothing came up I have to wonder if they're still in business. Can anyone tell me if this business does well or poorly in the Southwest? Also I'd like to know what the general success & failure rate is for this type of business. I'm going to help my friend in this business so I have an interest in knowing this information. Anyone with this information please reply.
Thanks

Re: Success or failure in the Southwest US?

Having not yet scooped my first pile of paying poop, I am probably not the person you need to hear from - however - don't get discouraged! I have come to realize, I think, much of the info we get from this site may be for far much eastern than we. I think there is tremendous value in the basic info provided - but I think no one realizes the cost of doing business in states west of the rockies! Business license -$275.00, fingerprints - $32.00 per licensee - legal posting $25.00 - advertising is a huge cost! - $34.00 per week in the classifides - the business release is free for my area - but a small 4" column ad is $56.00 / week in the local paper. ( I asked why, as a subscriber I was even paying for the paper when the advertisers were paying so much?) The response I got was "Have you checked other papers"? Not a particucularly comforting response! What I thought would "generousley" cost me $1500 - 2000.00 has now escalated to almost $900.00 - and I haven't even delt with the issue of insurance! I write that check tomorrow! $379.00 down / $60.00/month! But,I am not discouraged - I talk to my .com friends, and they can't get into business for less than $25,000! But of course - I will be scooping for them! I think I may have spent far too much time developing my business plan, but, for a new person, starting out,I think you need to! The issue is not necessarily the scooping - but providing what you and I both want when we purchase a service - the feeling we got our monies worth! I think we need not only to enjoy the feeling of providing a benificial service - but also enjoy the experience of starting your own business.

I can't of course, predict how the business in your area will develope, but I think with the committment of conciencious scoopers and agressive advertising you could doo well.

Having worked for a Fortune 25 ( yes, that's right - the 25 best of the best 500) I can tell you I choose no longer to be in the position of these folks! Their solution to a problem is to throw more money at it - it will go away! Quite true-in fact, but frequently the customer suffers! I think I prefer to be a "real" stockholder in my own company! and have a more realistic approach to business matters. After all, I don't have an unlimited budget! I have a limited amount of money to survive on - could if careful last until April 2001 - and so I am trmendousely committed to making this business a success! But i have to stay tremendousely focused on my goal - a committment to customer service! (not on the goal of my previous life - "the illusion of customer service".

Boy - howdy, I know this was long but I just needed to vent!

Re: Success or failure in the Southwest US?

Are there people in Phoenix? Are there dogs in phoenix? Do they eat?....

I state these smart-alick comments to make a point - This business does good in an area if you make it do good. Just look at the Int'l Directory - Argentina!? - I thought they ate dogs! and yet THEY even have a scooper.

Phoenix should be one of the best places on earth for a scooper biz - growing quickly, great climate, large metro area, heck, on a windy day I can sometimes smell their poop here in Dallas!
You better get busy before I decide to move there and start one myself!

I'd wish you luck but I know better - Just remember the 10 most important 2 letter words in the english language: "If it is to be, it is up to me!"

Re: Re: Success or failure in the Southwest US?

Hi Red,
Thanks for the response. You gave me
a good laugh. You're quite right. The reason why I posed the question is that we have had half a dozen or more scoopers in Phoenix and it would seem that maybe three now still operate. I wasn't sure why the failure rate - other than scoopin' poop isn't exactly the sweetest smellin' job!(and physically demanding too). I suppose that some also get into it assuming it's easy money with little work and then quit when they find out it is work. One of the scoopers I just mentioned is even selling his business to move on to other things. If my friend & I could afford to we would purchase a ready made biz. Like most others we will be starting out from scratch. We do have many horse owners here so there could be the posibility of customers there, over and above the dog owners.
Keep scoopin' in Dallas :-)

Any scoopers in Phx.let's here from you
so we know you're still out there!

Hi Tricia and Kim,

Thanks for the nice affirmations.

Kim, you are absolutely correct - It is a very tough business - both mentally and physically, not to mention financially.

Many people say that competition in THIS business is good because it helps to create better public awareness. I am like you though - I'd prefer to create the awareness by myself thank you!

Most do not and will not make it - but that doesn't mean they couldn't have if they just worked very hard, very smart and very long.

we just haven't figured the best way of advertising yet. Good luck to you! Let me know how it's going.

Re: Disinfectant

Hi Beth!

I use bleach only. I went to our neighborhood humane society and 3 different vets, and they all said that I would be wasting money buying the parvocides that others are using on this site. They all told me that in their experience, bleach was just as effective, if not more, cuz it not only kills but disinfects too and you can buy some that actually smell kind of nice too. I just don't water it down so much. With the compared costs, bleach was a much better choice.

Hi there Beth,
I am starting my business soon (in Australia). I have just made some enquiries on purchasing parvocide. My vet told me not to use it as it is a carconagenic( I don't know how to spell it but you know what I mean). I was also told that bleach was just as effective, although I'm not sure of the right strength to use. It sounds much safer too! It's what I'll be using!

Parvocide

In my part of the country I cannot ignore the possibility of spreading Parvo. In my research I have accidently tripped upon a scientific discussion of Glutaraldehyde (Parvocide) indicating it should be handled with great caution. I had no idea about the dangers. Here is the Web address for those interested in more information: http://www.ncchem.com/snftaas/aldehydes.htm .

I have also found a veternary consultant who specializes in safety issues including the use of such chemicals and have sent him several questions. I do not know if I can afford his answers but will keep you posted. I did ask about the effectiveness of safer substances such as bleach.

Re: Parvocide

Bleach is NOT safer. Read the warning label.

It also does not work well against Parvo.

I was in the drinking water business for over ten years. I'll tell you why some small systems use bleach (sodium hypochlorite). It's cheap and meets the EPA minimum requirements.

Celia...

While you are waiting patiently, print out the archives and read them. I put them all in two 3-ring (large) binders and keep adding to it. Your question has been covered many times in the archives. ...And there are wonderful hints and ideas in there too.

Marketing is your main start-up cost (and ongoing cost, come to think of it) I got a credit card from my bank and maxed it out at $7000 for Business Cards, Brochures, ads, T-shirts, Car sign, Booth set-up, etc., etc. That credit card has been paid off with my profits. Also, if you haven't yet gotten my free info "Cheap Marketing Tricks: A-Z", you'll find the how-to and address in the archives. As I said, lotsa valuable stuff in those archives!!

Re: starting a pooper scooper buisness

Hey Guys- this is not my message you've
confused someone elses message with my name
and e-mail address. You need to correct it or else the person who really wrote the message
won't get any responses and I'll be getting
answers to a question I didn't ask.
Thanks,
Kim

Re: starting a pooper scooper buisness

Kim,
Hello may name is Jack. Me and my wife Amy have just started in the business this past week. We have made great strides already, although we have yet to land our first paying customer. Fear of failure is what is holding you back. I can not tell you want to td, but I can offer some encouragement. Remember life is nothing more than a sum of your experiences. So if life is telling you no! Find out why. Best of luck to you...and keep it clean.

PS. What area are you thinking of starting in?

advertising

My wife and I have just started in the business. We have made great strides in this our first week. I have landed a deal with Greyhounds of America to clean an upcoming show with over 200 dogs and 1000 people attending. We are cleaning the show in exchange for a free booth and all of the advertising at the show we can handle. We have yet to land our first "paying" customer. We are going to be running a month long ad in a local coupon book that is distributed to more than 50,000 people and local businesses. Has any one advertised in such a venue before? Have you had any response? All thoughts and emails welcome! We are also aggressively seeking corporate accounts with condos and apartments. What has been the best way to reach this market for you seasoned scoopers?

Person with no name,

You ARE crazy - stick with your job. This business stinks!

PS: You say you're "confident that it will work"? Well I'm confident "it" will work too - unfortunately the problems come from ourselves not from "it".
...if "it" is to be it is up to ME...not "it".

Re: advertising

Hi floridascoop,

I'm still looking for a successful way to get into more apartments too so I'm curious what others might have to say there.

The greyhound event is a wonderful opportunity to get your name out there but having done several similar larger events, don't expect much.

The coupon idea sounds terrific! I'm attempting some coupons ideas as well. Please let us know how it goes!
