Mark,
The time you started up was just about the time the terrorist attacks happened. I have found in my poop scooping as well as another business that the events and moods of people have had a big dampening effect on business.
So take that into consideration. It was probably the most difficult time to start a business because people are quite distracted and nervous. We're finding that business is just starting to pick up again int he last 2 weeks. Second, if you can find the funds to advertise regularly (even 1 or 2 days a week but the same days every week), people will begine to call you. Consistency pays off. Third. place your flyers places dog owners will see them--vets, pet stores, groomers, etc. If your city will sell you a list of dog license holders, use that to send out postcard to dog owners. You may ultimately need to expand your geographic range if you want to grow enought to do this fulltime--40,000 may be too small to support that but you should certainly get some bites. Hang in there!!

Good advice there. Also, this is a tough time of year in the northern part of the globe. Right now, I'm placing ads with a mind to where I want the expansion in late winter and spring. Building awareness is a slow but important task.

Vehicle mileage!
Sat Oct 27 22:49:43 2001
Hey Folks!
Well I have made the mistake of leasing my first vehicle. I did opt for 25,000 km a year, however, I am now sitting at 40,000 km after one year. We do plan on purchasing the vehicle. My question is, when I want to purchase a used truck, which models can withstand alot of mileage and keep trucking?
P.S To all you new scoopers out there, get a used truck first!!!! You don't need the pressure of a high truck payment.
Thanks

Another suggestion... Mazda b series. They are the same as Ford Rangers, but costs less. I personally prefer the Mazdas over the Toyota. We just bought a brand new one (2001 b2300 - $13,500 @ 2.9% financing, Automatic and AC)And it has more power than my Toyota, gets better gas mileage, it drives better, sets higher and is just more comfortable than the Toyota. Our 94 Mazda has over 200k and it still looks and runs like new. (just maintain your vehicles) No one should ever lease a vehicle. All together we put on about 60,000 miles a year.
If you have cash, go for a good used truck. If you have to finance a used truck, it may cost too much in interest.

All of my trucks are Toyota. Top reliability and longevity. Starters are easy to get to and replace. We change oil regularly and do the minor repairs as soon as possible to avoid increasing damage.
I blew a head gasket on one this year - 235000 miles
The only trucks that don't have over 100,000 are the two newer ones. I don't plan to replace any of the current trucks until after a quarter of a million miles.
For those who are comcenred with American made - My newer Toyotas are built in Kentucky. Ford isn't building Rangers in the USA anymore.

Rangers

Ford Rangers are built at the Twin Cities assembly plant in Minnesota. Ford is also going to build a plant in Dearborn, Michigan to start building Rangers in the next few years. Ford Rangers are as American build trucks as you can get.

I stand corrected

For several years, non were built in the US. I'm glad to see Ford going back to United States taxpayers as a labor source.

Leasing can BITE! I've heard its better to park the thing when you reach your mileage limit than to pay by the mile (kilometer).
I bought a new '99 Ranger 2x, reg cab, short bed to haul with. It works fine and gets 20-21 mpg in mixed driving. Wish it had A/C and auto trany. It will be the employee vehicle when that time comes and I'll get the new truck then.

don't give an employee a stick to drive unless it's a dump truck.you will spend more money on burnt clutches than you can imagine
