A good way to get customers
Sun Nov 18 22:51:54 2001
I do not read this message board. Just happened to get here from another board, and I wanted to offer this idea to owners that are looking to pick up new customers.
I feel one of the most effective ways to pick up new customers is to hook up with a few lawn care companies in your area. If you can make connections with people who cut grass for a living, they may be able to help you acquire new clients. NO ONE that cuts grass all day long likes to step in CRAP, and believe me if they could find a way to maybe help the homeowner get it cleaned up, they probably would mention your service to the homeowner. Make friends with Lawn Care Companies and get results!
BTW, if this has been mentioned already on this board, then just disregard this message.

There are pros and cons to working with lawn care companies. We have worked with one successfully, but some try to steel your idea and scoop themselves. For the most part, I avoid them.

Door to Door Fliers or Hangers
Mon Nov 19 08:27:43 2001
I love the idea of door to door distribution of door hangers. However, I had the police called one time when I went door to door by some irate home owner. Seems he knew that permits are required and he did not like the idea of reading something about dog waste. You see, if I were selling cereal or anything normal, I would not be so reluctant. Perhaps, I should just take the fine that might come along and do it anyway. What do you all think?

flyer permit
Mon Nov 19 18:30:06 2001
If your area requires a permit, go check into it. Perhaps it is not that much and then the police can't affect you. I can't imagine someone taking the time to call the cops on that! But then again ... most people are idiots!!

Hi PSK,
If you are putting the hangers out yourself then just go purchase the permit (probably $20 or so) and then go put 'em out. If you are hiring a company to do it then they will already have a permit.
The cost should be about 9 cents per flyer to put them out. This does not inclusde production. It can get cheaper if they put more than one flyer at each house so you can split the expense with another company.
I have done approximately a quarter million of them.

Who'd of Thunk????????
Tue Nov 20 05:39:40 2001
That I'd meet so many cool people through scooping poop? Besides my clients (many of whom are really great), I've met all of you cool service providers. I aologize that I can't make a convention for a while. I now have two kids under 16 months. (Alyssa Marie, 15 months and Leyton Anthony 15 days.)(Both of these kids eat well because of this profession - don't let anyone fool you that you can't make a living doing this.) I do hope to get to one eventually though. I'd prefer a more Eastern location, however. I like Dallas, Florida or St. Louis. I think NewPort Richey, FLA or Orlando sounds very nice. (I'll do another post on that subject.)Anyway, I so want to meet Red cuz he is a stich. How many times over the last few months has he made me laugh? Many! Yuckos Debbie for all the help she's given me - dido Matthew. I've met and know Stefani with kids, Gwen fellow midwesterner. Pete, Matthew's wise successor. Vic in Neb. Trish in Reno, Minesweepers guy in NY. Laura Scoopless in Seattle. Couple of folks in FLa, dogpile folks and Jackie the pet sitter. Becky petsitting in Calli. Erin's a peach in GA. Tim is Da Man up in Compton! lol Who have I forgotten?

Catherines post on fliers
Tue Nov 20 06:04:05 2001
Catherine, your post was very helpful - the detail on your flier cost. Thing is, I want an actual door hanger rather than a flier. I don't think I'll be able to get it done for 35$ per thousand. Who can help me with a door hanger? I can create the content, but who cuts them out and sells em in bulk? Where do I get the actual hanger and how much should I pay per thousand or ten thousand?

Hanger costs
Wed Nov 21 01:51:12 2001
I had 5000 hangers printed up at a printer (not copier).
The case of paper stock with the hanger part cut cost $150 and the printing was another 150-200. Cost per hanger was $0.07.
Distribution might cost $0.10 each if you hire some kids. I did some myself and at the low rate of $30/hr and 120 hangers/hr, my cost was $0.25 each (ouch). I was busting butt to do that rate and I found kids will do about half that. (Pay by the hanger and they'll move faster.)
It was mentioned that Pro-Hangers might do 4 businesses at once, but then your message might get lost in the fray. I could see doing one other business when hiring kids.
BTW, I hired my church's youth group. Out of 150 kids, about 12 showed up and we did 800-1000 hangers in a few hours. The wage went into the group mission fund (they were going to Romania).
I will be doing this again soon in some new areas with local (to the new area) church youth groups. One or two minivans, pizza and pop make it go pretty smooth.

Re: Hanger costs

At 21 cents for post card stamps, I would think you could direct mail to a dog owner list for about the same price.
Personally, I drop flyers (and a pet related newspaper) on mail boxes myself so that I can target specific neighborhoods. I also direct mail postcards to neighborhoods where a flyer may not be appropriate. I don't use a door hanger cut, they don't hold up well in the wind.

Any professional printer should be able to do it for you. I paid $275 for 5,000. They were 4" x 11" and were three color on thick stock.

Jeff got a great price too. Let me ask, do many printers already produce door hangers so that I won't have to start from scratch with designing the construction? I know I'll be responsible for the content, but I mean the hanger itself?

Thu Nov 22 00:21:55 2001
You have to buy the hanger stock that comes with precut knob cutouts. You can get two or three hangers on a page.
I know what Pete means about the wind. I stuck alot of hangers in the weather strip anyway.
Bulk flyers probably cost 1/3 of what a hanger does.

Back a few versions ago, Word Perfect used to have a template for door hangers, but I don't see it anymore on their newer versions. Staples used to carry the forms for it years ago, but they don't carry it anymore. There is some signage software out there . . . maybe some of them might have a hanger template included.
