Dear Mr. Harrison,
We here in Central Park would like to let you know that your scoop has been recovered and placed into evidence. It seems that you assaulted an elderly gentleman with the very high quality scooping device. Luckily for us, the stainless steel handles preserve some very good fingerprints, and the fact you left your name and email address right here, you will be very easy to find. Thank You!

I used a local guy, got the two crewcab windows and the 3 back window sections done in 4 colors for $60.00. I also was able to get A-boards with the same logo (see scooperpics) and the two back side windows of my car done as well. Well worth it. The A-board was the most expensive @ $120.00 but that was the actual board that cost me. I prefer to see what I am getting before I approve it, so a local guy is my way, you might get a deal on the internet, but once it is done...it is yours....even if it isn't correct. Good Luck Look under signs in your yellow pages.

christmas poem
Sat Dec 8 02:01:19 2001

T'was the Night before Christmas for animal welfare folks:

T'was the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog filling their heads;
And mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap,
Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter;
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a luster of mid-day to objects below;
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus- with eyes full of tears.

He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick,
Last year's Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick;
More rapid than eagles he called the dog's name,
And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain.

"Now Dasher, now Dancer, on Prancer, and Vixen,
On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall,
Let's find this dog a home, where he'll be loved by all."

I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa had made one thing quite clear;
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons.

In our haste to think of the kids a gift,
There was one important thing that we missed.
A dog should be family, and cared for the same,
You don't give a gift and put it on a chain.

And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight,
"You weren't given a gift! You were given a life!"

Thanks for the feedback, Floyd! The site does get a fair amount of traffic, and I'm glad that many scoopers do get new business from the Directory. It helps the scoopers, but it's a vauable resource for dog owners, too!

For scoopers who have operating businesses and haven't yet listed their service on the International Directory of Dog Waste Removal Services, it's easy to be listed in the International Directory of Dog Waste Removal Services at www.pooper-scooper.com! Just send me the name, address and phone number of your currently-operating dog waste removal service. You may also include a line for a slogan, basic prices, geographic area in which you offer service, business-owner's name, and your e-mail and website addresses, if you like.

Happy Holidays!

Do I Go Home Today
Tue Dec 11 08:35:15 2001

Do I Go Home Today
My family brought me home all cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me, and smiled at me, and said I was full of charm.

They played with me, and laughed with me, they showered me with toys.
I sure do love my family, especially the girls and boys.

The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats.
They even let me sleep with them, all snuggled in the sheets.

I used to go for walks, often several times a day.
They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say.

These are things I'll never forget, a cherished memory.
For now I live in a shelter, without my family.

They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe,
but I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.

The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug.
So, I thought I did the right thing when chewing the bathroom rug.

They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside.
This I did not understand, although I tried, and tried, and tried.

The walks stopped, one by one; they said they hadn't time.
I wish that I could change things, I wish I knew my crime.

My life became so lonely, in the back yard on a chain.
I barked and barked all day long, to keep from going insane.

So they brought me to the shelter, but were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused an allergy, and each kissed me good-bye.

If I'd only had some classes, as a little pup.
I wouldn't have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up.

"You only have one day left." I heard the worker say.
Does that mean a second chance? Do I go home today?

Gene if you are successful in contracting all the pet sitting please teach me a thing or two. I worry about the IRS thinking that they would be employess. To be a true subcontract they have to have there own insurance and they get paid and hopfully are honest enough to give you your cut. You really have no control. Even a signed contract not letting others take your clients is not enough to stop some one from steeling your clients. It could be better if you make them employees. If you do good and it works out for you wright a book on the subject and I will glady buy it. Let us know how you do it.

first off happy holidays to everyone.funny ,i know most of the answers to these questions but asking the board is almost addicting,the info and responses are great(plus i have no life so i might as well generate some new reading material...okay i got a pick up do i need a cap.I'm sure some of you use p/u trucks what happens when it rains on all the stuff.do you just throw the bags in the back or did you set up pails???
also if i get my truck lettered my disposal method may be comprimised so how much is a dumpster, do you pay off the garbage man.if you do have a dumpster where are you keeping it or do private companys have small 75 gallon cans they pick up..i can probably bribe my guy's but since i work with them i'm not sure if i want to get involved with that.some people are just not fun to deal with.
i would appriciate any info on seting up the truck or types of caps that work well.certain types are probably a real pain to get in and out of.also if anyone knows of litter boxes with snap on lids(kind of like a tupperware )i would like to check them out as well

My truck does not have a "cap" on it. I think that the amount of ick I put in there would cause me to have to climb in with it just to dump it... yuck. I live in Seattle area which is known for it's rain fall... I just make sure the bags are securely tied.. I also use zipties to help maintain the closure. I personally still go to the dump.. but I am getting a dumpster in January! My cost is $85.00 a month. They come and dump it weekly. My garbage man actually suggested this route rather than going to the dump. And, it is big enough to hold my normal household garbage as well so it will save me in the long run! I hope this is of some help to you.. Laura

is the dumpster going to be at your house and how big is your property to have a dumpster ,better yet how big is this dumpster.i'm on 50x100 and my neighbors would strangle me for anything slightly bigger than a LARGE garbagecan

Re: re;dumpster

Yes the dumpster is at my home. It is about 5 foot by 7 foot. I have alot of room... very large yard! My neighbors also have large yards so we basically have to walk a block to see our next door neighbor! I guess I am lucky that way. However, if you have a small business in your area that has a dumpster, you might want to approach them about sharing thier's. if you were to dump on the morning of the "trash-day" then they wouldn't have it sitting around smelling up the joint. Share the cost and your neighbors won't need to see more than a large garbage can! Everyone wins... good luck~!

Employee vs. Independent Contractor
Thu Dec 13 01:05:33 2001

I just finished re-reading the discussion between Laura, Red and Erin re: employee or I.C. Since income taxes were my business for about 15 years, let me help with some information.

The big deal revolves around payroll taxes. Since the IRS will collect more total taxes if a person is classified as an employee, the rules make it very hard to qualify one as an I.C. When trying to determine whether a person is an employee or I.C. the IRS looks for the degree of control or independence. Facts that provide evidence of the degree of control/independence fall into three categories: behavorial control, financial control and the type of realtionship between the parties.

These are very complex subjects, but here are some tests they use. THIS IS NOT AN ALL-INCLUSIVE LIST - it is just the main points.

Behavorial Control - If the business has the right to control how the worker does the task, he is an employee.
- Whan and where to do the work
----------------------------
CA Mike
Oops, I hit the wrong key. continued...
Thu Dec 13 01:19:23 2001

- When and where to do the work
- What tools to use
- What work must be performed by a specified individual
- What order or sequence to follow
The key consideration is whether the business has retained the right to control the person. If so, he/she is an employee

Financial Control - There are three main tests here.

- The extent to which the worker can realize a profit or loss
- The extent of the worker's investment
- The extent to which the worker has unreimbursed expenses

Type of Relationship - Three more main tests

- The extent to which the worker makes his/her services available to the relevant market
- The permanancy of the relationship
- The existence of a written contract describing all aspects of the relationship

As you can see, we will probably fail the Behavorial Control issue, the worker will probably fail the Financial Control issue, and both will probably fail the Type of Relationship issue.

Having said all this, I feel that it is still preferable to have independent contractors instead of employees, if you can sort through all the little details.

Employees vs. Independent Contractors
Thu Dec 13 20:44:34 2001

Thanks for that information. This is exactly what I am dealing with. Since I am going to tell the person, when, where and how to do the job, I guess they will be employees. What are the benefits of independent then? or how do you get around it?

Re: Employees vs. Independent Contractors
Fri Dec 14 22:40:28 2001

Rachelle, I don't know what tax liability is like in Canada, but here your employees have to have workman's compensation "disability" (if they are injured on the job) and "unemployment" insurance. If you get a subcontractor, they are the owner of their own business as well. My take on this is, if you hire a "subcontractor" you can give the a per house fee you will pay them.. that leaves them open to make as much or as little as they want. And, if you don't tell them what order the "HAVE" to do the houses in... then they are making their own schedule. However, I believe that you can tell what day you want it done on... just as a contractor who subcontracts an electrician tells him when to be at what job, and when that job needs to be completed. SO, what I see as a benefit to hiring a subcontractor vs. hiring, is 1. insurance liability 2. Tax reporting and witholding 3. not getting sued for termination of employment 4. knowing you are paying a per yard fee, not an hourly wage (employees can be slow) (however, Red has a great bonus system that would speed them up) 5. the paperwork invovled in the hiring process alone is nuts! and what if they owe child support, then you have to keep track of that as well... so much work that you won't have to do with a sub! I am definately going to go sub... but for now, I hired a relative to do my office work... routing/billing, so i can be out there in the field.. Good Luck
