When seeking list of dog owners from Orlando, I was told that because dogs get shots from vets, who provide forms to obtain licenses, the information is exempt from freedom of information act because they are medical records. Does protection of medical record information protect dogs, as it does humans?

That's BS

Get it in writing and fight. Those aren't medical records as protected by law.

Fight carefully, be a nice guy, get great publicity.

Oh, btw, you may also get the info.

I live in So. Florida and have tried to get a list of dog owners for my pet sitting business and was told the vets in Florida are the ones responsible for them not giving out the list. the vets say it is there clients that make up the list of dogs registered in the state and they didn't want them given out. Anyone else hear of this?

and how bad do you want the info? Generally, dog licenses are issued by a government agency (the counties, in Ohio)

Find out who issues the licenses. Ask for the info. If they refuse, ask for a written explanation why.

I am trying not to expect too much from display ads coming out. Will let you know of response, if any. Im keeping my fingers crossed. Its not IF business will get rolling, its how soon and how fast.

Service Options
Thu Jan 17 17:00:00 2002

Okay, need some feedback please. This is my first year and biz is growing slowly but surely. I have offered weekly scooping service and the bucket pickup option. I have only had one request for twice a week service thus far. What customers I have, just love the service. My quiry is though, that 3/4 of my biz is bucket pickup service. The folks all say they don't mind picking it up themselves. Maybe I should be promoting twice a week service more? What do you think? Oh, my rates are $10.00 weekly yard scooping/ $16.00 twice weekly yard scooping/ $6.50 weekly bucket pickup/ $10.00 Ev. other week bucket pickup. (I provide a lined bucket which limits the amount). Thanks

Please Explain
Thu Jan 17 17:28:06 2002

Can you clarify this bucket pick up service please. You provide a bucket and liner and the customer picks up the crap themselves? Then do you come and pick up the liner and re-line the can for them for $6.50 a week? Do you scoop those houses at all?

Cannister service
Thu Jan 17 20:01:18 2002

Hi I also have cannister service. I usually do this for people that are A. out of my service area, or B. prefer to pickup for themselves. I supply 5 gallon cannisters that can be picked up at any Home Depot and I buy the lids as well. I attach handles to the lids.. overall cost about $10.00. If you have a Teriaki restaurant close by, you can also get the 5 gallon cannisters from them cheaper. I add the handle to the lid to make it easier for the client to open and close. (some of my clients have multiple buckets for lots of dogs, or only monthly pickup[if they are out of the area]) I charge a deposit for the cannisters to guarentee the return. I use the 33 gallon outdoor garbage bags (the stronger the better) and a bungee cord around the top to keep the bag from sliding into the bucket. I charge $8.00 per cannister per pickup. There are lots of people who just don't want that crud in their garbage cans

Yes, I provide a bucket lined with a plastic bag. The customer picks up their own throughout the week and I come by once a week on a set day and take the bag of goodies and then leave a clean bag in the bucket. So I am just disposing of it for them.

Do you want to be in business? get listed in information!
Fri Jan 18 00:58:06 2002

This one I love, its almost as bad as answering the phone hello or having an answering machine which answers nothing about a business.

1. You must get your company name listed in information...
How in the h--- is a potential new client going to find your phone number...

oh i heard of a company that pick up dog waste their name is ______, but i don't know or couldn't remember their phone number so why dont' you call information or look in the phone book...

Oh guess what, the paper did a story on my company but they didn't list the number,,, sound familiar....

If your serious, and want to start a business like this,
I hope you get a business number from the get go.
or otherwise your wasting your time, your just giving up your new potential client to another that is listed.

Hello from Iowa!
Sat Jan 19 16:28:52 2002

Haven't checked in to the board for awhile.

I am up to 12 customers!!! I know this is probably not a big deal to you pros, but for putting up my first flyer in a vets office on Dec. 14th, I am very happy! Two dog stops=5. Three dog= 1. One dog=6. 4 accounts, so far, from my mailing of 100 postcards. The rest from vet offices. We had a little bit of snow. My Easy Scoop II was a lifesaver! It is that scoop that is a combo rake/shovel with the telescoping handle--about $13 at Menards. Worked great without picking up excess snow. One of my customers was amazed at "my eye" for spotting just a itsy bit of poo sticking up through the white powder! She told me I had "a gift" !! You gotta love it!!!!!!! Take care, all of you scoopin' souls!!! Shari

Postcards
Tue Jan 22 00:03:36 2002

My postcard was plain white, no color at all. For those of you out there who think those florescent colored cards are an eyecatcher...stop wasting your money!! The people I have been delivering mail to for 18+ years absolutely hate those irritating, eyeHURTING colors and take them for junk mail, tossing them in the trash! And if it doesn't have a first class stamp on it...they consider it junk mail and usually pitch it as well!! AND...please, unless you have a large advertising budget, do not waste your dollars on those VAL-PACK coupon things that the mail marketers try to sell small business people. A HUGE percentage of those get pitched as well. Oh, I know that thousands receive them and if you can just get one or two accounts, blah, blah, blah. In a way, I guess all that junk mail is job security for me and the person who works for the coupon people, but you are better off targetin a small crowd with something more personal.

The text on my card went something like this:

Looking to make a "clean" start in 2002?

"We clean up what your pooch leaves behind!"

Well, that was it. Nothing fancy, just to the point. I might send out another round to the same bunch of 100 as the weather gets even warmer. I will keep you posted on further results.

Las Vegas sounded fun. If any of you are in the Des Moines , Iowa area, give me a call. We have a HUGE casino/racetrack nearby that is getting some national attention...Praire Meadows. Slots and horses...come make your donation to our state!!!! :)

Take care, Shari

Hi, Red -

Well, I didn't break the bank - but then again, I don't gamble. You see Floyd's message below, so he is a few dollars ahead of me.

I think there were eleven of us who showed up in LV. We had a good time meeting each other and spent much of Saturday sharing stories aobut the business. But we did get down to work and made some great strides in forming a new national organization. Now the hard work will begin. It's exciting!

Since Laura (NIMBY)has been spearheading this, she will probably want to tell you all about it. So, I'll defer to her. Look for some word from her within the next day or two.

O.K. here's what we know for certain...The weekend was a great success. Those who made it to vegas this weekend were able to work as an organizing committee and made some exiting decisions. Experienced, dedicated and diverse leadership has been appointed and are activly working to hammer out the details of a new organization for all of us. While there will be no National Convention this year, all Professional Scoopers can look forward to exciting announcements that will benefit each of us, as well as our customers, in the coming weeks. Stay tuned......

Anybody know of a source for cardboard brochure holders?
I know there was a mention of a company about 6 or 8 months ago but I'm not having any luck doing an archive search, or an internet search for that matter either.

Judy,
I ordered my cardboard holders through a company called Siegel Display Products 1-800-626-0322. Very reasonable and very professional looking for cardboard holders. They are shipped to you flat and you fold them yourself - very easy. I just glued my business card onto the front and they look great:) They will mail you a catalogue if you call them or you can look them up online - siegel.com. Hope this helps!

I don't have a source for cardboard brochure holders, but I have been using plastic one's from Merchandising Incentives. I believe when I was sourcing these I found these were actually cheaper than the cardboard, depending on how many you purchase. You should be able to do a search on the internet for this company's website. They are out of Chicago. Good Luck!
