Why i need to start this kind of business
Wed Jan 23 10:30:51 2002

Reasons

1. 39 years of age

2. I have a 3-year-old son.

3. I will be losing my job of 6 years as Engineering documentation Technician (i.e. AutoCAD drafting/design technical illustration/internet research) after April.

4. Have been laid off from corporate jobs 4 other times in my life since 1985.

5. I SICK and TIRED of making other people wealthy!

6. I want and need to be paid for MY hard work and as much as I can do....when I want to do it!

7. I want to be in charge of ME and only answer to ME!

8. I want the flexibility of scheduling my work around my life not my life around a job!

9. I've been cleaning cat litter boxes since I was 12 and it's really easy and doesn't take but a few minutes for me *lol*

10. I'm sick and tired of the word "Recession"

11. yeah i got more reasons but you guys are probably laughing so hard as it is right now {{{grin}}}

Starting a scoop business does not make you immune to recession.

Sounds like you may meet the requirements, although to quote Bob Dylan

"Yer gonna hafta SERVE sombody"

This

"7. I want to be in charge of ME and only answer to ME!"

may be a problem.

Floyd,
Try Jerry at Pooch's Poop Removal in Springfield, OH. He might service that area. He is in the directory under OHIO.

As far as I can tell, there are no professional scoopers in Lima.

BTW, Red. That's Lima like the bean, not Lima "Leema" in Peru.

I don't get it ..

Seems I live in a town where people LIKE to pickup their dog's pooh. I am getting more and more customers just wanting me to take it away (bucket pickup). There's still money to be made doing only the bucket pickup I realize but I am not as 'needed' by them so more likely to be dropped when/if their budget gets pinched. Hmmmm ... wondering why this is happening? Anybody got any thoughts on this?

Catherine, I really don't think that it is that your customers LIKE to pick it up, or that it is expendable from the budget... Many people like to know that the yard is clean all the time...unless you can do the yard daily, a cannister is the best option for them. Also..though I have not lost customers due to budget I think that a customer paying a$60.00 bill a month vs. a $20.00 bill a month the $60.00 would get cut first...so you very well may have a longer term client with the cannister service. I don't think that the "picking it up" part of scooping is the gross part, but the "what do I do with it now?" is. That of course is a personal opinion But so often on first time clean-ups I find a mass of poo right next to the old pet-store scooper..obviously they don't know what to do with it from there. If that is the service the area wants, PUSH IT! You can do 4 times as many (if not more) cannisters in a day than you can scooping...think of the big bucks you'll be making! (I am jealous) Laura

Thanks for the comments/pep talk! I was getting concerned about the balance of things, thinking the buckets(canisters) were less secure but Laura, you make a good point. The smaller monthly bill may lead to longer term clients. I looked again at my client profiles and see that many said they walk their dogs daily, so therefore the mess is not always in their yard and the bucket would indeed work better for them. I do have several customers as well that have cats, so the bucket is great for them. (There's something I'm not some of you do). So in review, I see that 'getting rid of it' seems to be the main focus around here. It's a fast in and out and onto the next. Okay .. so I will promo it all and let it turn out the way it turns out. Goodlines Pete - Thanks for ideas.

bag pick-ups are good, too!

It does seem unusual that there would be a lot of bag-pickup-only customers compared to the number of full-service customers. Maybe the difference in your full-service price and bag-pickup price is very large, or maybe your local trash department or health department have been making a point about people putting dog waste in their regular trash? Perhaps your marketing or publicity seems to suggest the bag-pickup idea more than the regular service? Do you think any of these situations is true in your case?

Still, bag-pickup service could be even more profitable for you on a per-hour basis, compared to cleaning yards. I would love to have a whole lot of bag-pickup customers. You can do a heck of a lot more bag pickups in a day!

In the winter, my ads say "Scooping poop is a cold and nasty job".

I also use "You have better things to do than scoop poop." and "Eventually, you reach apoint in life where you don't scoop poop."

Now is the time to develope the market, and that means changing attitudes.

How 'bout "At this price, can you AFFORD to do it yourself?"
